Frequently Asked Questions
1. Film development and digitization
-
Which films can be developed?
Our store currently only offers developing services for C-41 color negative film.
We can develop 35mm, 120mm, half-frame, and disposable cameras like "Utsurundesu." -
Are there any films that cannot be developed?
【IMPORTANT】Undevelopable Films and Risks
The developing machine currently used in our store is exclusively for "color negative film (C-41 process)". Black and white, reversal, and large format films will be supported in the near future.
If any of the following films are mixed in, the developing solution will be contaminated, leading to a serious accident such as machine breakdown.
- Black and white film (excluding C-41 process films)
- Reversal (positive) film
- Motion picture film (repacked/ECN-2)
- Overseas film with no process specified
- Film repaired with tape
In the unlikely event that these films are mixed in and cause damage to the developing machine, we may charge you for repair costs and business compensation at actual cost.
If you are unsure about the type of film, please contact us before sending it.
Accidents and Compensation during Storage
We handle entrusted films with the utmost care, but in the unlikely event of a developing machine problem, force majeure accident, loss, etc., compensation will be limited to the following scope:
Refund of the cost of the relevant film
*Please note that we cannot compensate for "costs incurred for shooting (transportation fees, etc.)" or "the value of the recorded content (memories)." We also cannot be held responsible for postal accidents (loss/damage) that occur during delivery to our store.
-
Can you digitize developed negatives?
Yes, it is possible.
We can also digitize (reprint) negative film developed at other stores or negatives taken in the past.
【 Supported Formats 】
Size: 35mm film (full-frame / half-frame)
Type: Color negative, monochrome, reversal (positive) *Regardless of type, all will be digitized into high-quality data using digital duping. (A dedicated scanner for 120 film is currently under development. We will begin accepting orders once it is complete.)
【 How to Order 】
Depending on your desired finish, please purchase either the "Standard Plan" or "Basic Lab (RAW data delivery)."
At that time, please write "Digitization of developed negatives requested" in the remarks column on the cart screen.
⚠️ Important Notes Regarding Fees
Even if you bring in developed negatives, the fee will not change from the "normal price including development fee."
(Even if the development process is omitted, we charge a flat fee as a basic cost for scanning work and equipment operation. Please understand this in advance.) -
Can you develop foreign films like MARIX and YESSTAR?
We can develop all C-41 color negative films, such as MARIX, YESSTAR, and SantaColor.
*However, please note that some batches may show individual differences in the finished results after development due to variations in quality. -
Can I choose to have borders or no borders for the film?
Currently, all data is delivered with a "bordered" edge.
This is because bordered scans produce more stable and beautiful colors.
In the future, once the automation software is complete, we plan to change this to an option of bordered or borderless. -
Can expired film be developed?
Developing is possible.
However, there are risks:- Overall color cast (green, red, yellow, etc.) may appear
- Contrast may be low, resulting in dull photos
- In the worst case, almost nothing may be captured (loss of sensitivity)
We will do our best to correct it, but please understand that there are limits to what can be corrected due to film deterioration itself.
- Overall color cast (green, red, yellow, etc.) may appear
-
Can you develop and scan film that is under or overexposed?
Yes, it can.
However, please note the following tendencies in the results:- Underexposure (too dark)
Noise tends to increase, and colors may shift. - Overexposure (too bright)
Areas where highlights are completely blown out cannot have their color or tonal information recovered.
While we will correct within the possible range,
please understand that information may not be recoverable if the original exposure was significantly off during shooting.*We plan to implement a detailed exposure feedback option (paid) soon.
- Underexposure (too dark)
-
What are the differences between JPEG and TIFF? Which one should I choose?
Roughly speaking:
- JPEG
File size: Small
Image quality: Sufficiently good (ideal for social media and smartphones)
Color editing: Minor adjustments are fine - TIFF (16bit)
File size: Quite large
Image quality: Rich in data and tonal gradations
Color editing: Suited for serious retouching and large prints
"I want to view photos on my phone and upload to social media as they are shot" → JPEG is sufficient.
"I want to seriously fine-tune colors myself in Lightroom or make large prints" → TIFF is more suitable. - JPEG
-
What is pre-inversion RAW data? What can it be used for?
When film negatives are scanned,
the data that is still in "negative state with orange mask" and has not yet undergone color inversion or correction is referred to as Pre-inversion RAW data.- The colors are orange, and it looks like a "negative as is."
- Intended for those who want to invert and adjust colors using specialized software like Negative Lab Pro.
- Large file size, and requires some knowledge to handle.
This is an option for those who want to create their own color profiles from scratch, or who are experienced in digitizing film.
It is generally not necessary if you simply want to "view photos normally." - The colors are orange, and it looks like a "negative as is."
-
What is the difference between the Standard Plan and the Color Enhancement Plan?
Commonalities (Image Quality and Scanning Conditions)
The scan quality itself is the same for both plans.
- 35mm film: Full-frame scan at approximately 24 megapixels
- 120 film: Full-frame scan at approximately 100 megapixels
- Specifications include capturing the full visible area without cropping
In other words, the resolution and amount of information are the same for both plans.
The difference lies in "how much time is spent meticulously adjusting colors and tones."
Standard Plan
- Adjusted to Natsusomare's standard, with a slightly blue-green tint
- Adjusts exposure, white balance, contrast, etc., to achieve a state that is
"sufficiently beautiful while retaining the film's character." - This is a standard finish that emphasizes overall balance, checking each frame but without excessive meticulousness.
👉 If you think "it's fine if it just looks normally good" or "I mainly use it for social media or everyday purposes," then the
Standard Plan offers perfectly adequate quality.
Color Perfection Plan
- Compared to the Standard Plan, more than double the time per frame is spent on adjustments.
- While meticulously checking the gradations from highlights to shadows, skin tones, and color shifts,
the optimal balance is sought for each frame. - This plan is designed to meticulously adjust even the atmosphere, based on style specifications or reference photos, such as "Natsuiro" or "Somarre."
👉 If you want to "finish it as a work of art," "intend it for an exhibition or printing," or "want to be particular about the color atmosphere,"
choosing the Color Perfection Plan will allow you to best appreciate the difference. - 35mm film: Full-frame scan at approximately 24 megapixels
-
What is the difference between Natsuiro and Somarre?
At Natsusomarre, you can choose from two types of color-enhanced finishes:
"Natsuiro" and "Somarre."
Both prioritize a film-like texture while offering different approaches to color creation.
▶ Natsuiro
A bright and beautiful finish with a sense of transparency.
This is Natsusomarre's "standard color" designed to complement Japanese landscapes, skin tones, and everyday snapshots.- Soft, light tones
- Emphasizes transparency and brightness
- Naturally brings out the nuances of blues and greens
- A finish designed to evoke an immediate sense of "beauty"
If you're unsure, Natsuiro is recommended as a starting point.
▶ Somarre
A "mood-focused" finish that adapts rich overseas tones to blend with Japanese scenery.
- Subdued colors
- Soft, warm-toned hues
- Reduced contrast while valuing an airy texture
- For those who seek "style" and "atmosphere" in their photos
This is popular among those who want to elevate their usual photos to a more "artistic" level.
▶ Which one should I choose?
- For natural beauty and transparency → Natsuiro
- For an overseas-style tone and atmospheric photos → Somarre
Both are designed to enhance the beauty of your photos according to the shooting scene,
without compromising the charm of film. - Soft, light tones
-
What's the difference between the Kiki Plan and the Degas Plan?
Both are high-end plans that require more time to finish than the "Standard" or "Color Pursuit" plans.
What they have in common is that the scan resolution is the same as the regular plan:
35mm: Approx. 24 megapixels, full-frame scan
120: Approx. 100 megapixels equivalent, full-frame scan
What differs is "who edits, with what philosophy, and how much time is spent on editing."
▶ What is Plan: Degas?
Inspired by the Impressionist painter Edgar Degas, this is a "special finishing plan with a predetermined worldview."
Features (Key Points Only)
- Approximately 5 times the working time of the Color Pursuit Plan
The editing time spent per roll is overwhelmingly long,
and each frame is carefully refined according to "the worldview for this plan." - Unique ICC profile + Duplication process
Using an original ICC profile and a dedicated duplication process (copying process),
the finish aims for a wet and profound texture.
This is suitable for those who prefer a "moist" and "low-key" tone. - Dedicated担当者固定: Nanasiki Exclusive
To prevent variations in the finish, Degas is handled exclusively by staff member Nanasiki.
This design eliminates differences in perception between staff members and maintains a consistent tone for Degas. - For intermediate to advanced users and those with digital experience
Cuts with significant exposure discrepancies
may not turn out as desired no matter how much they are edited. This plan is particularly suitable for those who can control exposure to some extent
and those who are accustomed to digital photography and want to enjoy film as a "difference in texture." - Free TIFF data
Degas includes 16-bit TIFF data at no additional charge.
For those who want to refine it further themselves
For those planning exhibitions or large prints
This configuration easily accommodates such cases.
- Free feedback option
If requested in the remarks section,
"I'd like to be praised"
"I'd like comments on whether it's suitable for exhibition"
"I'd like some deliberately strict advice"
etc., Nanasiki will provide text feedback. - Estimated Delivery Time (Based on Actual Operation)
Standard: Approx. 1-2 weeks
Quick Pass: Estimated 1-3 days from arrival date
*Due to the very large volume of work, it will take more time than the standard plan.
▶ What is the kiki plan?
This is a "full-custom color refinement plan" handled by owner kiki herself. If Degas is a "special finish with a predetermined worldview,"
the kiki plan is closer to a "made-to-order" approach, designed from scratch to match the customer's preferences and uses.Features (Key Points Only)
- 2-3 times the working time of the Color Pursuit Plan
Each roll is edited for 2-3 times longer than with the Color Pursuit plan.
Fine adjustments are made, taking into account the intent of each frame and its intended use (exhibition/portfolio/SNS, etc.). - Very high degree of color freedom
We can accommodate, as much as possible, requests such as reference photos, preferred photographers or films, and detailed instructions like "this cut should be like this" or "this roll should be like that."
This is for those who want to create more freely, without being bound by existing styles like "Natsuiro" or "Somarre." - More thorough feedback
If desired, feedback will include good points for each photo,
comments on exposure and composition,
suggestions on how to improve in the future,
etc., providing quite in-depth feedback. - Some re-editing (readjustment) possible
For requests like "I'd like this cut to be a bit more like this," it's possible to re-edit a few frames (approx. 3 frames as a guide) to be even better.
However, for cuts where the original exposure is significantly off, or information is lost/crushed, dramatic changes may not be possible no matter how much re-editing is done.
In such cases, kiki will do her best within her capabilities and honestly convey the limitations. - For those who are serious about creating their work
This plan is for those who want to finish their work for photo exhibitions, professional use, or portfolios,
who want to consult with a "sense of creating a work together,"
who want to pursue the tone and atmosphere of each individual image to the fullest,
etc., essentially, for those who want to approach their photography as a complete "artwork." - Dedicated担当者固定: Owner kiki
All editing is done personally by owner kiki.
This plan directly reflects the philosophy of the lab itself.
- Approximately 5 times the working time of the Color Pursuit Plan
-
Can you print my photos for me?
We can print documents from A4 to A3 size. If you would like to print something, please contact us.
-
I have negatives that were developed at another store. Could you convert them to data only?
Yes, we also accept requests for digitalization of developed negatives only.
However, we currently only support 35mm (135) film.Supported Scope and Fees
- 35mm (135) film: Digitalization only supported
→ The fee is the same as for development + digitalization.
There is no price difference such as "cheaper/more expensive because it's only digitalization." - 120 (medium format film): Currently not supported
→ Once our proprietary scanner under development is completed,
we plan to officially support digitalization of 120mm film as well.
- 35mm (135) film: Digitalization only supported
-
How will you be receiving the data? Is there an expiration date?
We will send the data via a Dropbox download link.
- The link is valid for 30 days.
Please note that we cannot re-deliver data after the 30-day expiration period.
- The link is valid for 30 days.
-
Can I return the film cartridge (spent film case)?
Yes, that is possible.
We will return it along with the developed negatives. However,
Please specify in the remarks column in advance which film cartridge you would like returned (e.g., Kodak Gold 200, etc.). -
Please let me know the delivery schedule.

Can I develop half-frame photos one by one?
Normally, for half-frame film, we develop and digitize two frames as one shot.
If you wish, it is possible to develop and digitize each frame individually. In that case, please use the "Half-frame 1 by 1" option.
Please note that digitizing each frame individually takes twice as long as usual, so an additional fee will be charged for this option.
2. Regarding scans and color
-
What is the scan resolution? (Difference between 35mm and 120)
At our shop, scan resolution is the same for all plans.
- 35mm (135): Approximately 24 megapixels equivalent
- 120 (medium format): Approximately 100 megapixels equivalent
- All full-frame scans (capturing the entire visible area)
In other words, the "image quality itself is the same" for Standard, Color-focused, Kiki, and Degas.
The difference lies in "the time and approach spent on color editing." - 35mm (135): Approximately 24 megapixels equivalent
-
Why does it have a black border (black frame)? Can I remove it?
This is proof of full-frame scanning,
as it captures everything, including the film's outer edge.- Produces the unique ambiance of film
- Colors are more stable
- Highest quality method according to lab standards
- Currently, all scans are delivered with a black border.
*Borderless (no edge) scans are expected to be available once our automated system, currently under development, is completed.
-
Can you still fix it even if the exposure is severely off?
Areas that are completely black or completely blown out cannot be restored after scanning.
- Underexposure (too dark): Increased noise, color shifts
- Overexposure (too bright): Loss of highlight detail
- Severely misaligned exposure has limits to correction
We will adjust it as beautifully as possible, but information missing from the original film cannot be corrected with any plan.
- Underexposure (too dark): Increased noise, color shifts
-
Does the color vary by plan?
Natsusomare's color profiles are based on two axes: "Plan (time spent on editing)" and "Taste (direction)."
First, we will explain "differences by plan," and then "differences in taste (Natsuiro / Somarre)."
① Differences by Plan (Differences in "Time and Depth" spent on editing)
*Scan resolution is the same for all plans
- 35mm: Approx. 24 megapixels
- 120: Approx. 100 megapixels
- All full-frame scans
▶ Standard Plan
- Natsusomare's standard clear color profile with a greenish-blue tint
- "Sufficiently beautiful" finish with adjusted exposure, white balance, and contrast
- Ideal for hobbies, everyday use, and social media
▶ Color Pursuit Plan
- Editing takes more than twice the time compared to the Standard Plan
- Meticulous finish with detailed adjustments to highlights, shadows, and atmosphere
- For intermediate users who want to "achieve a bit more"
- Taste (Natsuiro / Somarre) can be selected here
▶ kiki Plan
- 2 to 3 times the working hours of the Color Pursuit Plan
- Handled by owner kiki
- "Crafted as artwork" according to the customer's preferences and reference photos
- Fully customized, intended for exhibitions and artwork production
▶ Degas Plan
- Approximately 5 times the working hours of the Color Pursuit Plan
- A profound and wet world created through proprietary ICC + duping process
- Assigned to "Nanashiki" fixed
- Special finish with a clear direction for the world view
② Differences in Taste (Finishing Direction)
*Mainly the finishing options available for "Standard, Color Pursuit, and kiki"
▶ Natsuiro
- Bright and light
- Transparent greenish-blue tones
- Excellent compatibility with sky, sea, and daytime snapshots
- Refreshing, modern film color reminiscent of positive film
▶ Somarre
- Calm tones
- Reduced contrast
- Soft colors that value atmosphere and lingering impressions
- Moist expression suitable for interiors, portraits, and evenings
- 35mm: Approx. 24 megapixels
-
Is the color unevenness (red, green, etc.) caused by scanning?
Most of these are due to film preservation conditions and degradation from expiration.
- Expired film
- High temperature storage
- Humidity
- Undeveloped for a long period
- Light leaks
Discoloration caused by these factors cannot be completely eliminated even with editing.
- Expired film
-
Why is the noise (graininess) so bad?
The main causes of noticeable noise (graininess) in film photos are usually one of the following:
▶ 1. Underexposure (too dark)
This is the most common cause.
When frames that were underexposed during shooting are brightened during scanning,
noise tends to increase inevitably.- Indoors / Night / Backlight
- Aperture too small / Shutter speed too fast
- Insufficient film sensitivity (e.g., ISO 100 at night)
In particular, underexposure cannot be completely eliminated through editing.
▶ 2. Graininess inherent to high-speed film (ISO 800-3200)
The higher the film sensitivity,
the more pronounced the graininess (film grain) naturally becomes.- SUPERIA 1600
- Cinestill 800T
- Overseas brands with ISO 800 or higher
will exhibit larger grain even in bright conditions.
▶ 3. Deterioration of expired film
- Color cast
- Reduced contrast
- Rough grain
are more likely to occur and may appear as noise.
Items stored in high temperatures and humidity are particularly prone to deterioration.
▶ 4. Prolonged storage before development
If left undeveloped for a long period after shooting,
the emulsion deteriorates, increasing graininess and fuzziness.▶ 5. Rolls with large variations in exposure
If a roll contains a mix of
- very dark frames
- very bright frames
the correction range becomes wider, making noise more likely to appear.
▶ 6. Forcibly enhancing "areas with insufficient information" during editing
If information that was not originally present in the film (pitch black or nearly black) is enhanced, digital graininess will occur.
▶ Noise is not a "scanning error."
In most cases,
it is due to the exposure during shooting, film characteristics, or film condition, and is not a defect in scanning or digitization. Natsusomare adjusts it as naturally as possible, but
it is not possible to "completely clean up" areas where the original information is insufficient. - Indoors / Night / Backlight
Camera Repair and Sales
-
Can I ask you to repair my camera?
Currently, Natsusomare has only one dedicated repair staff member, and because we are also simultaneously working on tasks such as in-house scanner development, we are continuously falling behind on repairs. Therefore, it is difficult for us to support all models, but we are relatively familiar with the following models and have a high probability of being able to handle them.
▶ Models with a high probability of being repairable
- Nikon FE / FE2
- OLYMPUS PEN F / PEN FT
- Minolta SRT Super / SRT101
We have extensive experience with these models, and in many cases, we can repair them depending on the type of malfunction.
▶ Cameras purchased from Natsusomare will be prioritized for repair
We will prioritize repairs for cameras purchased from our store as much as possible.
(We will address not only initial defects but also malfunctions during use, to the extent possible.)
▶ Whether a repair is possible often "cannot be determined without disassembling" the camera.
Film cameras have old structures, and it is not uncommon for the cause not to be identifiable solely by external operation.
- Even if it appears normal on the surface, internal gears may be chipped.
- The cause of shutter malfunction may span multiple locations.
- Inappropriate parts may have been installed during previous repairs.
These are machines where cases are often only discovered after opening them.
▶ Please feel free to contact us first.
Even if you are unsure whether it can be repaired, you can still contact us. If you provide:
- A description of the symptoms
- Photos and videos of the camera's exterior
we will make a judgment.
Consultation is free.
Please contact us once first. - Nikon FE / FE2
-

What is a Natsusomarana ticket?
This is a special card given only to those who have purchased a camera at Natsusomare, offering a discount of 300 yen permanently on developing and digitizing film. It's like a "dedicated discount pass" that allows you to use the standard developing and digitizing service for 300 yen off every time, forever.
▶ Why is there such a discount?
This benefit was created with the desire to help customers who purchased cameras from Natsusomare continue to enjoy their film photography for a long time. Film often has higher "running costs" than the camera itself, so the aim is to reduce the burden and make it easier to continue shooting.
▶ When can I start using it?
Currently, we are in a pre-opening discount period, and prices are already special, so the ticket discount is not yet active. Once prices return to normal, presenting the ticket will grant a permanent 300-yen discount every time.
▶ What format is it?
The card is planned to be an
electronic version (digital card) (currently in preparation).
